Spotlight on Plecostomus: not just cleanup crew

Plecostomus, or "plecos," are popular freshwater aquarium fish known for their algae-eating habits and unique appearance. Native to South America, these hardy catfish are a fantastic addition to tanks, but it's important to do your research first! There are many species of plecos, and while they can be easy to care for, it’s important to note that some species grow very large—up to 24 inches! Make sure your tank size matches their potential growth. If you have a smaller aquarium (less than 100g) opt for smaller species like bristlenose, rubberlip, or clown plecostomus.

Beyond algae, plecos enjoy a varied diet, including sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein treats. Providing driftwood is also essential for some species, as they like to graze on it for fiber.

Adding a plecostomus to your tank not only helps maintain cleanliness but also brings a fascinating, prehistoric vibe to your underwater world.
