Iwagumi: minimalist elegance underwater
Iwagumi aquariums are a style of aquascaping rooted in Japanese aesthetics, emphasizing simplicity, balance, and the natural beauty of stones. The term "iwagumi" translates to "rock formation," and the layout typically features an odd number of carefully arranged stones to create harmony and a focal point.
These aquascapes are generally comprised of several small, a few medium, and one large rock, each traditionally with different designations in Japanese. The smaller rocks should be 1/3 in size compared to the large stone, while the medium rocks should be 2/3 in size compared to the large stone.
Complemented by carpeting plants and minimal fish, Iwagumi tanks highlight open space and serene design. This style is ideal for aquarists who appreciate the art of restraint and the calming effect of a minimalist underwater landscape.
